A recent ranking saw four Japanese cities in the top 10, with Hong Kong, Taipei, Seoul, and Kuala Lumpur also making the list.

Against this backdrop, Mercer has released its Quality of Living 2023 ranking, which assesses the practicalities of daily life for expatriates and their families working outside of their home location. 

In addition, Vienna maintained its position as the top-ranked city globally this year, with Zurich closely behind in second place. Auckland and Copenhagen secured third and fourth place, respectively.

Singapore got to the top of the list (29th in the world) among Asian countries because it has great infrastructure that is kept in great shape. There are four big towns in Japan: Yokohama, Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. They were ranked 47th, 50th, 58th, and 63rd, in that order. According to the ranking, these towns are known for their cutting-edge technology, good public transportation, and rich cultural history.

Also, Seoul and Busan, South Korea’s two biggest cities, came in at 81st and 95th place, respectively, on the list of the top 10 Asian cities based on their quality of life.

 The remaining ten Asian megacities are:

  • Hong Kong (77th),

  • Taipei, Taiwan (82nd),

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (86th), and

  • Taichung, Taiwan (95th).

What effect does this have on luring talent and firms from abroad?

A location’s appeal to employers and employees is influenced by factors other than only the standard of living it offers, such as cost of living.

Generally speaking, nations and cities work hard to draw in foreign companies, as well as remote workers and digital nomads. Right now, the most prosperous places are those that offer a good quality of life, a fair cost of living, and flexible government for mobile talent.

Lastly, in determining these rankings, the study used New York City as the base city in comparing the factors taken into account for the global ranking. This year’s ranking includes 241 cities across five continents.
