Google has fired a lot of people again. This time it’s on YouTube, its video-sharing site. A representative for the company told TechCrunch that they will eliminate 100 jobs. Google fired more than 1,000 people last week in a number of departments, such as tech, services, and the voice-activated tool Google Assistant.
“As we’ve said, we’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.
“To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient, work better, and align their resources to their biggest product priorities. Some teams are continuing to make these kinds of organizational changes, which include some role eliminations globally.
YouTube’s chief business officer, Mary Ellen Coe, told staff in an internal letter sent on Wednesday afternoon that the job cuts were part of changes to the company’s artist management and also operations teams. Tubefilter was the first to report this news.
The 100 workers who were affected may be able to apply for other jobs at YouTube, but this doesn’t mean they will automatically get a job there. As per The New York Times, employees have sixty days to find new jobs before they are publicly fired.
“We’re continuing to support any impacted employees as they look for new roles here at Google and beyond,” the spokesperson added.
Additionally, in the first three weeks of 2019, dozens of tech companies have already laid off workers. These companies include Discord, Twitch, Prime Video, MGM Studios, Audible, Duolingo, Instagram, Pixar, and Unity.
