Up to 20 MYAirline workers filed a police report today accusing the troubled airline of paying them back for unpaid wages.
Alongside them was Kamarul Baharin Mansor, Secretary-General of the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), who filed a police report at the Sepang district police headquarters (IPD).
Bernama reported that the workers filed the police report because MYAirline purportedly stopped paying salaries and contributing to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and the Social Security Organization (Socso) in May.
The cash-strapped MyAirline suspended operations on 12 October, making the company’s over 500 employees wonder if the organization would still employ them after it launched its first flight on 1 December of last year.
On 16 October, Datuk Seri Azharuddin A. Rahman, MYAirline’s interim accountable executive and director, stated that the company would prioritize resolving two significant issues: paying staff salaries and issuing refunds to customers who have paid for ticket bookings.
When contacted, ACP Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof, the chief of the Sepang district police, confirmed receiving the report and stated that the Kuala Langat and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) IPDs will be handling the matter.
In the meantime, Kamarul Baharin stated that to guarantee the welfare of the airline workers is safe and they may carry on with their lives, the matter necessitates government participation, particularly from the Ministry of Human Resources.
“Their lives are adversely affected and I hope the government will take note and act immediately,” he said.
