Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that all government-linked companies (GLCs) that offer internship positions are now required to pay an RM 800 minimum monthly allowance to their interns.
It is known that some companies either pay interns a low wage or none at all.
He said that despite these interns undergoing internship and training at companies, it would be difficult for them to support themselves if they come from underprivileged families.
“In order to set a good precedent, the Finance Ministry has instructed that all GLCs hiring students undergoing practical training or internships must pay them at least RM 800 monthly,” he said during the Budget 2023 Consultation programme at the Finance Ministry (July 14)
Prime Minister Anwar who also holds the position of Finance Minister said that this step came following a suggestion from a Form Six student during a dialogue.
He explained that students can also give good suggestions on how to improve the livelihood of those living in this country.
However, he has not announced when this will come into effect.
