Sainsbury’s is a British grocery chain, will now hire 22,000 temporary workers for the Christmas season which is a 22% increase over last year as it ramps up its workforce earlier than usual.

This food giant, the second largest in the United Kingdom after Tesco, announced plans to hire 20,000 staff for its supermarket network and 2,000 for its Argos general goods section. It hired 18,000 individuals last year.

“Sainsbury’s will welcome temporary colleagues earlier than usual this year, starting as early as this week,” the company announced on Thursday.

“This will ensure there are plenty of colleagues ready to help and serve customers, whether they like to plan ahead or leave their Christmas shopping to the last minute.” Sainsbury’s said it had improved employee perks for the holiday season, including a larger staff discount offer and free food during shifts.

According to market analyst Kantar, Britain’s abnormally warm September and early October slowed early sales of Christmas food.

Amazon UK announced earlier this week that it had begun recruiting for more than 15,000 seasonal positions, while Morrisons and Aldi announced last week that they were adding 3,500 and 3,000 extra staff for the Christmas season, respectively.
