Malaysia Ranked 6th In Asia For Digital Quality of Life

Surfshark has issued its fourth annual Digital Quality of Life Index (DQL) survey, which ranks 117 countries, or 92% of the world population, on five essential digital life pillars.

The five pillars are:

  • Internet affordability: How long people have to work to afford a stable internet connection. The affordability of the internet connection directly impacts its accessibility.

  • Internet quality: How fast and stable the internet connectivity in a country is and how well it’s improving. The quality of internet connectivity greatly depends on its speed and stability.

  • Electronic infrastructure: How well developed and inclusive a country’s existing electronic infrastructure is. Highly functional e-infrastructure enables people to use the internet on a daily for various purposes.

  • Electronic security: How safe and protected people feel in a country. E- security shows a country’s readiness to counter any cybercrimes and its commitment to protect everyone’s online privacy.

  • Electronic government: How advanced and digitised a country’s government services are.

Taking into account all these factors, these were the overall rankings globally:

  1. Israel

  2. Denmark

  3. Germany

  4. France 

  5. Sweden

  6. Netherlands

  7. Finland

  8. Japan

  9. United Kingdom

  10. South Korea

Meanwhile, among Asian markets studied, those within Southeast Asia and India ranked as follows: 

  1. Singapore – 4th (15th globally)

  2. Malaysia – 6th  (38th globally)

  3. Thailand – 11th (49th globally)

  4. India – 16th (59th globally)

  5. Vietnam – 20th (70th globally)

  6. Indonesia – 21st (72nd globally)

Looking into two specific qualities – internet affordability and internet quality, Malaysia ranked 16th when it comes to internet affordability, while Singapore and Indonesia ranked 4th and 81st respectively. 

In addition, India was ranked 21st, Vietnam was ranked 57th, and Thailand was ranked 70th.

Malaysia scored 41st in terms of internet quality, while Singapore ranked 5th, Indonesia ranked 77th, and Thailand ranked 15th.

Simultaneously, Vietnam was ranked 56th, and India was placed 57th.
