According to the company, engineers, equipment technicians, and process technicians will make up 95% of these positions.
The new expansion fabrication facility, which was formally launched in Singapore on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, is estimated to generate about 1,000 high-value jobs.
The semiconductor maker estimates that engineers, process technicians, and equipment technicians will make up 95% of these positions.
Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, attended the US$4 billion (S$5 billion) facility’s opening ceremony. He stated that the fab was “the first one in Singapore that is capable of 29nm specialty chip production.”
The new facility, which covers 23,000 square metres, will increase GF’s worldwide manufacturing footprint and strengthen its capacity to provide clients with product security and flexibility across its manufacturing facilities in three continents (including the US and Europe). The expanded fab would increase GF Singapore’s overall capacity to over 1.5 million wafers (300mm) each year, making it the nation’s most cutting-edge semiconductor facility to date.
Within one year of the groundbreaking ceremony in 2021, the first tool was brought into the building in June 2022. The Administration and Manufacturing buildings both received Green Mark Gold designation from Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority thanks to the building’s engineering design that prioritises sustainability. According to reports, it is equipped with the newest techniques and methods for managing resources, disposing of garbage, recycling and reusing water, and improving overall energy efficiency.
Dr. Thomas Caulfield, president and chief executive officer of GlobalFoundries, commented on this by saying, “We are excited to ramp up our operations at the Singapore expansion facility. By using this website, we can make sure we have the capacity customers require as they work to improve their supply chains. This brand-new facility is a product of our tight collaboration with our clients and the Singaporean government, as well as a monument to the diligence and hard work of our staff.
The new facility would “invigorate Singapore’s sophisticated semiconductor ecosystem that serves different parts of the value chain,” according to Jacqueline Poh, Managing Director of EDB, through the creation of jobs and collaborations with regional small-and-medium businesses.
