Assistant engineer lost both legs due to a surgeon’s negligence

Assistant engineer lost both legs due to a surgeon's negligenceAccording to an assistant engineer at the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), the surgeon at a well-known private hospital’s negligence caused him to become a person with disabilities (PWD).

Isman Ibrahim, 41, has sued the hospital in the High Court, claiming that 5 years ago, the hospital’s carelessness resulted in the amputation of both of his legs.

“I went to the hospital for appendicitis, but due to the doctor’s negligence, I lost my legs. The surgical procedure did not go well when the doctor pierced and tied the main blood vessels, causing both legs to turn black or gangrenous,” he explained to reporters after the court proceedings, according to New Straits Times.

Isman described how, in order to preserve his life, they sent him to another private hospital and had both of his legs amputated up to the thigh. The experience was more emotionally taxing because his wife was expecting their fourth child then.

“For 10 days, I had to hide my fate from my other three children before they cried seeing my latest condition,” he said, expressing the emotional toll the incident had on his family.

In addition to the physical harm, Isman said that the surgeon’s negligence caused him excruciating nerve pain every two days, and he had not had a restful night’s sleep in five years.

Isman affirmed his intention to taking the issue to court and invited others who were in similar circumstances to come forward, all in an effort to seek justice and spread awareness about hospital incompetence.

Firhat Muhd Fikri Isman, the attorney representing Isman, declared that although the initial case sought RM55 million, they would resubmit the claim to protect his client’s interests, including recovering the correct cost of prosthetic legs.

“We want the plaintiff to lead a normal life. The re-filing of the lawsuit claim will be done within the next month,” he assured.
