The University of Manchester’s profound impact on the professional development of Malaysian leaders took center stage during its 200th anniversary celebration in Kuala Lumpur.

The Bicentenary Reception, held at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur, brought together over 150 alumni, students, and distinguished guests, underscoring the pivotal role the university plays in shaping the careers of its Malaysian graduates.

Malaysia, home to the University of Manchester’s fourth-largest alumni base globally with over 20,000 graduates across Southeast Asia, has produced a wide array of influential leaders in diverse fields.

Notable alumni at the event included Tan Sri Dato’ Hanafiah Hussain, Malaysia’s first Malay chartered accountant; Datuk Seri Lim Chong Keat, an architect behind many of the country’s post-independence landmarks; Dato’ Ong Eng Bin, former CEO of OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad; and Joanne Rodrigues, Group CFO of Affin Bank, who was recently named one of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Asia 2024.

The impact of the University of Manchester on these individuals’ careers was a central theme of the event. Dato’ Ong Eng Bin, reflecting on his time at the university, said, “The University of Manchester instilled in me not only academic excellence but also a strong sense of loyalty and social responsibility. These values have been instrumental in guiding my professional and societal contributions.”

Joanne Rodrigues echoed similar sentiments, crediting the university’s Global MBA programme for shaping her career trajectory.

“Being recognised as one of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women in Asia is an incredible honour. It prompts me to reflect on a pivotal moment in my career—my decision to pursue an MBA at the University of Manchester. This transformative experience empowered me to find my voice and drive meaningful change in both my professional and personal life,” Rodrigues shared.

The University of Manchester’s Global MBA programme, offered through its South East Asia Centre, has been instrumental in advancing the careers of Malaysian professionals by focusing on leadership, strategy, and entrepreneurship.

The programme’s flexible structure allows students to obtain an MBA without relocating, providing them with the tools to become industry leaders. Accredited by AMBA, AACSB, and EQUIS, the programme is recognised globally for its excellence.

Beyond its academic programmes, the university’s focus on sustainability and social responsibility also serves as a critical influence on its alumni.

Professor Stephen Flint, Associate Vice-President for Internationalisation at The University of Manchester, remarked during the event, “As we gather to celebrate our 200th anniversary, we not only honour our rich legacy of groundbreaking research but also reaffirm our commitment to shaping a better world.”

The university’s Sustainable Futures Platform and partnerships with Malaysian institutions were highlighted as key initiatives addressing global challenges. Such as climate change and resource management.

These efforts further demonstrate how the University of Manchester equips its alumni to make significant contributions to both local and global communities.

Looking ahead, the university is committed to continuing its legacy of nurturing leaders who make meaningful impacts across the globe.

As it enters its third century, The University of Manchester remains a beacon of innovation, education, and social impact. Fostering the next generation of leaders in Malaysia and beyond.
