According to the most recent EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) survey, Malaysia has attained one of the highest levels of English proficiency worldwide, especially in Asia.
Malaysia was ranked in the 2nd highest tier of “High Proficiency” out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries surveyed by the index, which divided the countries into 5 proficiency bands ranging from Very High to Very Low.
Malaysia comes in 3rd place in the Asian rankings, with Singapore and the Philippines coming in 1st and 2nd, respectively. Malaysia is ranked 25th in the index worldwide. The EF EPI 2023 City Scores list Kuala Lumpur as the only Malaysian city, with a “High Proficiency” classification.
Just so you know, Kuala Lumpur scored 564 and Malaysia scored 568 on the 2023 index, a six-point drop from the previous year. The average worldwide is 502.
Interestingly, Kuantan ranks first as the top city (603), and Perak comes out as the Malaysian region with the highest English proficiency (587). With an average score of 582, the 26–30 age group has the highest average score in the nation.
