The Labor Department fined employers RM4.3 million

As reported by The Star, employers all around the country have received compound notifications totaling more than RM4.3 million for various labor offenses this year.

A total of 1,654 investigation documents (IP) were opened between January and October 2023, according to Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar.

“These covered offenses under the Employment Act, Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act, and the Minimum Wages Order.

“We issued fines to the tune of RM391,236 for 357 of those IPs while 775 other IPs had RM3.958mil in compound notices meted against offenders,” he told reporters after attending an operation at Pasar Borong KL on Wednesday (Nov 15).

He claimed that they carried out the operations at the market following multiple complaints.

“We want to ensure that no workers here are facing discrimination.

“Some employers are not making Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and Socso contributions for their workers.

“We also received information that some employers were not paying their workers,” he said,

He continued by saying that they found that some employers were giving their employees cash payments.

According to Sivakumar, this would be illegal without the director general of the Labor Department’s approval.

He explained that using banks to pay wages was a way to track the transactions and ensure there was no fraud.
