TikTok confirms layoffs in Malaysia

Reports of layoffs in Malaysia as part of a global workforce reduction have been verified by TikTok.

The company representative said today, “We are unable to give a precise figure at this time, owing to varying local employment regulation processes around the world.”

“We anticipate that several hundred people will be impacted globally.”

According to the representative, TikTok’s move is in line with its continuous efforts to improve its content moderation tools.

“We expect to invest US$2 billion globally in trust and safety in 2024 alone and are continuing to improve the efficacy of our efforts, with 80% of violative content now removed by automated technologies.”

A news source revealed yesterday that hundreds of workers at TikTok’s Malaysian unit, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, had been let go.

The article, which cited a source, said that over 500 people—the majority of whom held content moderation positions on the platform—received emails terminating their employment.

CNN revealed in May that TikTok intended to lay off a sizable percentage of its marketing and worldwide operations staff.

At the time, teams in charge of user support, communications, content, and marketing were impacted by the widespread layoffs.

According to a June Bloomberg story, ByteDance fired 450 employees at its Indonesian division after purchasing a regional e-commerce company and integrating it into TikTok’s operations.

The Chinese company stated in the same month that it intended to invest RM10 billion in Malaysia in order to position the nation as a regional center for artificial intelligence.
