According to Amazon Web Services (AWS), the AWS Asia Pacific region has been created in Malaysia to assist local companies and organizations run their applications closer to home and provide better user service.

As part of its long-term commitment, Amazon Web Services intends to invest an estimated US$6.2 billion (or roughly RM29.2 billion) in Malaysia through 2038.

The establishment and functioning of the new Amazon Web Services region are projected to boost Malaysia’s GDP by approximately US$12.1 billion (RM57.3 billion).

Additionally, through 2038, it will sustain, on average, over 3,500 full-time equivalent jobs at external organizations, according to a statement released by AWS today.

These employment will be a part of the AWS supply chain in Malaysia and include those in construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications, and also other areas of the nation’s economy.

Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, stated that establishing an AWS infrastructure region here gives Malaysian organizations and enterprises of all sizes access to cutting-edge technology, enhancing the nation’s capacity for digital innovation.

“This milestone is a significant step towards fulfilling the vision of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 to build a highly-skilled, innovative, prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable economy,” according to the statement.

“We recognize the transformative power of digitalization, cloud computing, and AI as key drivers in Malaysia’s effort to become a manufacturing and services hub within Asia.

“As the largest investment made by an international technology company in Malaysia, the AWS infrastructure region will help ensure Malaysia remains competitive on the global stage,” he stated.

According to Prasad Kalyanaraman, vice president of infrastructure services at AWS, organizations in Asia Pacific can now fully utilize the world’s most extensive and dependable cloud using Malaysia’s newly established AWS region.

Customers will be able to implement cutting-edge applications using a variety of AWS technologies, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML), with this assistance.

“Malaysia’s rapidly growing digital economy requires access to secure, resilient, and sustainable cloud infrastructure.

“With today’s launch, AWS is proud to support Malaysia’s digital transformation and help accelerate its role as a regional hub for AI,” he said.

With the opening of the AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) region, AWS now also spans 34 geographical regions with 108 availability zones.

Additionally, the firm has revealed intentions to expand its AWS footprint by six regions (Mexico, New Zealand, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud) and add eighteen more availability zones.

Availability zones, which locate infrastructure in different and discrete geographic areas, comprise AWS regions.

The AWS Asia Pacific (Malaysia) region consists of three availability zones. These availability zones are close enough to each other to provide low latency for high-availability applications that use several availability zones. However, far enough apart to guarantee customers’ business continuity.

Redundant, ultra-low-latency networks connect each availability zone and have their own power, cooling, and also physical security systems.

AWS customers who prioritize high availability can further increase fault tolerance by designing their applications to operate in various availability zones.
