AirAsia expands to Subang Airport, Borneo flights starting 30 AugStarting 30 Aug 2024, AirAsia has extended its activities in Malaysia to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (Subang Airport) with two domestic destinations: Kuching, Sarawak and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

After AirAsia began operations at Subang Airport twenty-three years ago, it symbolizes a turning point in the airline’s history.

Managing Director Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra of AirAsia Malaysia said the development complements its operations at its central hub, KL International Airport (Terminal 2), confirming its position as the country’s largest airline in terms of connectivity and capacity.

“The decision to operate at Subang Airport as our second home in Kuala Lumpur is driven by several compelling factors and opportunities.

“The airport’s location and proximity to the city centre and surrounding suburbs offer an optimal travel experience for guests in the vicinity,” he told reporters after launching AirAsia’s operations at the Subang Airport today.

Tan Sri Tony Fernandes established AirAsia in 2001 alongside Capital A Bhd chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun with just two aircraft at Subang Airport before shifting to KL International Airport (KLIA) a year later.

After eight years of running from LCCT in Sepang, AirAsia relocated its operations to Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) in 2014.

AirAsia would operate two aircraft with 14 weekly trips out of Subang Airport, Capt Fareh stated.

Furthermore, he said, this extra operation is expected to propel not just in Malaysia but also in the next phase of expansion around the region.

“We are eagerly anticipating the addition of more routes from Subang, especially international ones, which are currently in the planning stages and subject to regulatory approval.

“This will reinforce our vision of transforming Malaysia into a premier aviation hub. We are optimistic about making Subang our sixth hub in Malaysia in the near future, further bolstering our network and expanding our capacity to serve more destinations and guests,” he added.

Group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes stated, however, that the government’s choice to transform the airport into a regional aviation hub complements the goal of ongoing aviation sector change.

He said the airline also intends to launch AirAsia+ for its flight schedule at Subang Airport, providing more excellent value to business travelers.

Starting today until 28 Jul 2024, for the travel period between 30 Aug 2024 and 8 Oct 2025, the promotional fares are accessible for booking on the AirAsia MOVE app and airasia.com.
